Voksende modstand mod tyrkisk medlemskab af EU

Forfatter: Harry Vinter

Mens datoen rykker nærmere, vokser modstanden i EU-landene.

Press Release

Last Minute for Europe – International Demonstration in Brussels with EP Representatives

August 29, 2005, Monday, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Place Jean Rey

BrusselsThe pan-European initiative “Voice for Europe” (VfE) organises a demonstration on Place Jean Rey in Brussels on August 29 against the opening of negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU. More than 100 activists from different countries of Europe will arrive in Brussels to take part in the demonstration, which precedes the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Newport on September 1. Mr. Elmar Brok, chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Mr. Michael Gahler, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Development will meet Voice for Europe activists on Monday. Simultaneously with the demonstration in Brussels there will be solidarity signature collections running in several European cities: in The Hague, Copenhagen, Athens, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, Munich, Vienna.

Daniella Csizmadia, the Hungarian spokeswoman of Voice for Europe told us: ’With the demonstration in Brussels, we suggest to the European decision makers that it is not yet too late to cancel the opening of the accession talks with Turkey, and  redefine the relationship between the EU and Turkey, based on new grounds.’

During the Brussels demonstration, activists will set up a huge clock with special patterns on Place Jean Rey in order to raise attention to the last minutes before the decision. The hand of the clock stands motionless at 5 minutes to noon which symbolically shows that the last moment of the decision making process, which will determine the future of Europe, has arrived and that it can still be changed. Politicians are urged to make a resolute step towards building up special partnership instead of promising full membership to Turkey.

As an act of solidarity, activists throughout Europe will simultaneously collect signatures for the petition against the accession of Turkey (in Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Copenhagen and other cities).

The demonstration will be made spectacular by the release of balloons, which is a message for European politicians to let the idea of Turkey’s full membership go. The balloon also symbolises the fragile nature of the European Union: if it is blown too big, it bursts.

VfE activists believe that the European Union is not only a political-economic association, but also a cultural community based on common values; therefore the limits for the enlargement of the EU should be rationally drawn according to cultural and geographical factors. The accession of the Republic of Turkey to the EU would not contribute to European integration; on the contrary, it would complicate and impede the process.

Upon request of the VfE campaign, some representatives of the European Parliament will be at the disposal of the press on Monday, the 29th, and Tuesday, the 30th.

Programme:
